In the amuat Blue Book report on trade statisties for the year 1936 improved conditions in the Colony were predicted and the note of optimism was fully justified as illustrated by the trade returns for the The total visible trade of the Colony in 1987 increased by 85,09% in terms of local currency, as compared with 1936, and by 70.5% as compared with 19:15, In terms of sterling the total visible trade increased by 32.2% in 1967 as compared with 1966, and by 9.6% as compared with 1995. Tra- ports and exports of merchandise during 1987 amoned to a total value of $1,084.4 millions (£669) millions), as compared with $803,3 millions (£50,6 millions) in 1986.

(It should be noted that sverige T.T. sterling rate for 1987 was 1s. 2.13/10d.; 1980: 1s. 3.3/16); and 1985; 1s. 11.5, 107.).

Imports of merchandise totalled $617.1 (£38.1) millions in 1987 as compared with $452.4 (€28,3) millions in 1986 und $365.0 (435,3) millions in 1985; whilst exprats totalled $467.8 (£28.8) millions in 1937 as compared with $50.9 (£22.1) millions in 1880 and $271.0 (826.1) tuillions in 1985.

In terms of local currency imports of merchandise in 1987 increased by 36.4% as compared with 1946, and by 69.1%, as compared with 19835; whilst exports increased by 33.2% as compared with 1960, and by 72.4%, as compared with 19835,

In terms of sterling value imports of merchandise increased by 98.7% in 1987 as compared with 1998 and by 7,90% as compared with 1995; whilst exports increased by 30.3% in 1937 as compared with 1936, and by 10,3% as compared with 1935.

Total movements of treasure amounted to $781.6 millions in 1997 as compared with $210.5 millions in 1986 and $254.7 millions in 1935; imports accounting for $386.4 millions as compared with $72.7 millions in 1936 and $38.8 millions in 1995, and exports $395.2 millions as compared with $143.8 millions in 1936 and $216,01 millions in 1995.

During the final quarter of 1937 a certain amount of cargo originally destined for China ports was diverted to the Colony on account of the Sino-Japanese hostilities, a considerable proportion of which Tenuined in storage at the end of the year, although a certain quantity, which connot be estimated, wis eventually disposed of locally and included in Hong Kong trade returns, In assessing the relative Traie returns för 1936 and 1937 it should be borne in mind that, the recurds do not include transit or tran-hip- loent enrees and, therefore, do not inclule cargoes originally destinel for Cluna ports which were stored in loral godowns at the end of the year,
