The Royal Observatory is situated on a hillock, 100 feet high, near the southern extremity of the Kowloon Peninsula. To the South is Hong Kong Island, consisting of a range of hills running east and west, with peaks from 1000 to 1800 feet high. The nearest point on this range is 24 miles from the Observatory. Five miles to the eastward of the Observatory, where another small peninsula projects southward, is a range of hills from 700 to 1000 feet high. To the North a range of hills from 200 to 400 feet high stretches across the peninsula a mile from the Observatory. From 3 to 20 miles farther North the ground is hilly over the greater part of the peninsula with peaks from 2000 to 3000 feet high. To the westward of the Observatory the hills on Lantau Island, 10 milos distant, rise to 3000 feet.
