There were increased imports in 1956 of the following groups of commodities 1935: Live animals, chemicals and drugs, Chinese medicines, dyeing and tanning materials, foodsturla and provisions, fuels, hardware, liquors, machinery, manures, metals, minerals and ores, nuts and seeds, olik and fate, paints, paper and paperware, piece goods and textiles, tobacco, vehicles, wearing apparel and aundries: the only groups showing a decrease being building materials and railway materials. There were increases in all groups of exports with the exception of live animals and fuels.

Total movements of Treasure amounted to $216.5 millions in 1936 as compared with $254.7 millions in 1985. Imports totalled $727 millions in 1936 as compared with $38.8 millions in 1935, and exports $143.8 millions as compared with $216.0 millions.

Average T.T. opening rates of exchange during the sir 1936 were:-London 1/3.8/16; France

U.S.A. 31.7/16: Shanghai 105: India 83.5,8: Singapore 53.7/8; Japan 108.1/8; 522.15/16; Java 48.8/4.

Wholesale prices in the Colony showed an increase of 32.3% in 1936 as compared with 1935, and an increase of 12.7% as compared with 1931

Increases were recorded in each of the four groups of commodities, viz. Foodstuffs, Textiles, Metals and Minerals, and Miscellaneous Articles.

IMPORTS AND EXPORTS REVIEW.

In the following report some comparisons are given of the more important import and export con- modities during the years 1986 and 1995:

ANIMALS (LIVE).

Imports totalled $8.0 millions in 1936, as compared with $7.9 millions in 1935, and exports $184,000 in 1986. as compared with $168,000 in 1935.

Imports of Cattle increased from 48,570 head ($2.2 millions) in 1935 to 52.246 head ($2.3 millions) in 1936, there being increased arrivals from South China and Kwong Chow Wan, and a falling off from French Indo-China and Siam

Imports of Pigs decreased from 288,950 hend ($5.5 millions) to 248,410 head ($5.4 millions).

BUILDING MATERIALS.

Imports totalled $6.6 millions as compared with $6.7 millions, and exports remained steady at $3.5 Tulious.

Imports of Bricks and Tiles increased from 81 million pieces ($143.7499) to 12.0 million pieces ($134,409), the decline in value being due to the fact hat in 1936 there were no imports from the United Kingdom and Japan. the whole supply being received from China

Imports of Cement decreased, whilst exports increased slightly. Imports totalled 1,387,000 piculs ($1,089,000) as compared with 1,637,000 piculs ($1,188,000, and exports 892,000 piculs ($1,186,000) as compared with 860,000 piculs ($1,140,000). On scent of the closing down of a locally owned factory in Macao there were no imports from that country. Imports from French Indo-China increased from 281,000 piculs to 343,000 piculs, whilst the Japanese figure derlined from 1,329,000 piculs to 1,035,000 piculs. There were increased export to British Malaya, Taitish North Borneo, Kwong Chow Wan and the Netherlands East Indies.

Imports of Glass (Skeet and Pans) decreased from 7,948,000 square feet ($467,000) to 6,099,000 square feet ($511,000). features of the trade being the decline of Belgian glass from 5,230,000 square feet to 2.347,000 square feet, and North China's increase from 591,000 square feet to 2.281,000 square feet. Imports from Japan increased from 3,000 square feet to 119,000 square feet.

Imports of Hardwood fell from 1,068,000 cubic feet ($810,00m) to 697,000 cubic feet ($786,000). imports from British North Borneo, which is the chief source of supply, decreased from 998,000 cubic feet to 699.000 cubic feet.

Imports of American Pine decreased from 911,000 cubic feet ($179,000) to 557,000 cubic feet ($187,000),

As an off-set imports of China Fir increased from 153.000 cubic feet ($107.000) to 232 000 cubic feet ($155.000)

CHEMICALS AND DRUGS.

Imports totalled $5.4 millions as compared with $4.5 millions, and exports $3 4 millions as compared

with $29 millions

Imports of Acide (All Kinds) increased from 9,359 pieuls ($77,061) to 13,674 piculs ($128,582). Imports of Pharmaceutical Products increased from $1,402,000 to $1.970.000 and unenumerated items from $608,000 to $935,000.
