of Justice, as distinguished from"imprisonment for safe custody, &c.
THESE QUESTIONS ARE TO BE FILLED UP IN RESPECT OF EACH PRISON IN THE COLONY.
Questions.
I. If the Prison is on a separate system, is the separation complete ? Aul, if not, what is the separa- tion enforced by day and night rospectively ?
II.—If not on tho separate system, what provision is there for the supervision of the prisoners while in association ?
III-How many cells are there; and how many Besociated wands 7
IV. Taking the average number of prisoners in Gaol, how many cubic feet of space are there for each prisoner during the hours of sleep?
V.—How are the prisoners classified ?
Answers.
The Victoria Gaol is nearly on the separate system. The Branch Prison at Lai Chi Kok is not on the separate system, Prisoners work and sleep in asso- ciation. The Female Prison is partly on the separate system but prisoners are mainly in association both night and day,
Vietoria Gaol :-All cell doors are provided with inspection holes through which the prisoners can be seen by the officers patrolling the wards. While at labour or exercise the prisoners are at all times under the immoliute supervision of Principal Warders, Warders, and Assistant Warders, At Lai Chi Kok Branch Prison, officers patrol behind grillos at night. Female Prison. Cells buve inspection holes. Ward- resses patrol at night during the day the prisoners are under the supervision of the Mutrons and Wardresses.
Victorin Gaol:- 633 cells on the separate system, 9 association cells, I condemned cell and 1 padded cell. Lai Chi Kok:- 9 association Halls-with accom- modation for a total of 642 prisoners.

Femule Prison, 394 cubic feet to each prisoner, In classification their sentences and nationality are taken into consideration; they are classified as follows, viz. :-

Convicted adult prisoners.
Debtors.
Misdemeanants.
Un remand nud awaiting trial. Juvenile offenders,
All the prisoners of the above classes are separated
at night, and in the yards, so fur as possible.
