of Justice, as distinguished from imprisonment for safe custody, ke.

THESE QUESTIONS ARE TO BE FILLED UP IN RESPECT OF EACH PRISON IN THE COLONY,

Questions.

I-If the Prison is on a separate system, is the separation complete? And, if not, what is the separa- tion enforced by day and night respectively?

II.—If not on the separate system, what provision is there for the supervision of the prisoners while in

association ?

III.-How many cells are there; and how many associated wands ?

IV. Taking the average mumber of prisoners in Gaol, how many cubic feet of space are there for oach prisoner during the hours of sleep?

V.—llow are the prisoners classified ?

The Victoria Gaol is nearly ou the separate system. The Braneb Prison at Lai Chi Kok is not on the supurate system. Prisoners work and sleep in asso-

ciation,

Victoria Gaol :~All well doors are provided with inspection holes through which the prisoners can be While ut sven by the officers patrolling the wards. labour or exercise the prisoners ure at all times under the immediate supervision of Principal Wardere, Warders, and Assistant Warders. At Lai Chi Kok Branch Prison, officers patrol behind grilles at night.

Victorin Guol:- 637 cells on the separate system, 9 association cells, I condemned cell and 1 padded vell, Lai Chi Kok:- * Halls—ench Hall can accom- modate 60 prisoners.

Lai Chi Kok:-There are 602 cubie feet to-osch prisoner and each one has 54 sq. feet of window cap- able of being opened.

In classification their sentences and nationality ure taken into consideration; they are classified as followɛ, viz.:-

Females.

Europeant, Indians, and Chinese.

Convicted adult prisoners.

Debiturs.

MisdemeanaN(9,

All the prisoners of the above classes are sepurated

at night, and in the yards, so far as possible.
