The surrounding country is flat, except to the North, where a range of hills from 200 to 100 feet high stretches across the peninsular a mile front the Observatory From 3 to 20 miles farther North the ground is hilly over the greater part of the peninsular with peaks from 2000 to 3000 feet high. Five miles to the eastward of the Observatory, where another small peninsular projects southward, is a range of hills from 709 to 1000 feet high. To the westward of the Observatory, the bills on Lantau Island, 10 miles distant, rise to 3000 feet.
