The Royal Observatory is situated on a hillock, 100 feet high, near the southern extremity of the Kowloon Peninsular, about 1000 yards from the harbour to the South, 500 yards from the east side of the peninsular and 900 yards from the west side. The surrounding country is flat, except to the North, where a range of hills from 200 to 100 feet high stretches across the peninsular a mile from the Observatory. From 3 to 20 miles farther North the ground is hilly over the greater part of the peninsular with peaks from 2000 to 3000 feet high. Five miles to the eastward of the Observatory, where another small peninsular projects southward, is a range of hills from 700 to 1000 feet high. To the westward of the Observatory, the hills on Lantau Island, 10 miles distant, rise to 3000 feet.
