I.—If the Prison is on a separate system, is the sepuuration complete ? And, if not, what is the separa- tión enforced by day and night respectively?

HI,—If not on the separate system, what provision is there for the supervision of the prisoners while in

association ?

HI-How many cells are there; and how many associated words ?

IV. Taking the average uumber of prisoners in Guol, how many cubic feet of space are there for encl prisoner during the hours of sleep?

V.-How are the prisoners classified ?

The Victorin Gaol is nearly on the separate systeta. The Branch Prison at Lai Chi Kok is not on the separato system.

Prisouers work and sleep in asso- ciation.

Victoria Gnol :-All cell doors are provided with inspection holes through which the prisoners can be seen by the officers patrolling the wards.

While at labour or exercise the prisoners are at all times under the immediate supervision of Principal Warders, Warders, and Assistant Warders. At Lai Chi Kok Branch Prison, officers patrol behind grilles at night.

Victoria Gaol:- 655 cells on the separate systemi, 12 associated cells, and 1 condemned cell.

Lai Chi Kok:- 4 Halls-ouch Hall can accom- modate 50 prisoners,

Lai Chi Kok;-There are 602 cubic feet to each prisoner and each one has 64 sq. feet of window enp- able of being opened.

In classification their sentence and nationality are taken into consideration; they are classified as follows, viz. :—

Debtors.

Europeans, Indians, and Chinese.

Misdemeanants.

·

On remail and awaiting trial.

First offenders. Habitual criminals. Juvenile offenders.

All the prisoners of the above classes are separated

at night, and in the yards, as much as possible.
