Ventilation is as good as pos- sible in a ship, and the cúbic space allowed to each patient is liberal. On emergency over 110 could be nevommodated, giving ench 600 feet on upper deck and 900 on lower deck. During the sittmer months ventilation of the lower deck is not good owing to winds belog light or absent.

• This, of course, does not include the large air-space ahove the private wards and dispensary, passives, ke,

+ Including sliding shutters above private wards,

In addition to all there is an open space of 4 inches between the side and roof of ship all round.

All the excreta, &c., pass straight into the sea so that only sweef water can ever collect in the bilges, which are ventilated by 2 up and 2 down shafts each 3 ft. 9 in. iu circumference.
