Ventilation is very good all over ship and the cubic space allowed to cach patient is there- fore liberal. On emergency over 110 could be necommodated giv- ing each 600 feet on upper deck and 900 on lower deck. During the summer months ventilation of the lower deck is not good owing to winds being light or absent.

This, of course, does not include the large air-space above the private wards and dispensary, passages, &c.

+ Including sliding shutters above private wards.

In addition to all there is an open space of 4 inches between the side and roof of ship all round.

All the excreta, &c. pass straight into the sea so that only sweet water can ever collect in the bilges, which are ventilated by 2 up and 2 down shafts each 3 ft. 9 in. in circumference.
