By Penal Imprisonment" is meant Imprisonment inflicted as a substantive Punishment in pursuance of a sentence of a Court of

Justice, as distinguished from Imprisonment for Safe Custody, &c.

THESE QUESTIONS ARE TO BE FILLED UP IN RESPECT OF EACH PRISON IN THE COLONY.

Questions.

I. If the Prison is on the separate system, is this separation complete? And if not, what is the separa- tion enforced by day and night respectively?

11. If not on the separate system, wint provision is there for the supervision of the prisoners while in association?

III. How many cells are there; and how many associated wards?

IV. Taking the avenge number of prisoners in Gaol, how many rubic feet of space are there for each prisoner during the hours of sleep?

V. How are the prisoners classified?

The Prison is not on the separate system. Forty- six cells are on the separate system and the majority of the European prisoners and a small number of Chinese prisoners sleep in separate cells, the remainder are in association day and night.

All the eelis of the prison have iron gates, through which the prisoners can be seen at night. While at labour or at exercise, the prisoners are constantly under the supervision of the Prison Ollicers.

There are 190 cells, and I associated ward for debtors.

The daily average number of prisoners confined in the Gaol during the year 1886 was 674. The cubie incasurement of all the wells combined has been in- It has been re- correctly stated in previous returus, measured in March last by the Surveyor General's Departement and found to be 203,844 feet, therefore giving a eubie space of 674 feet to each prisoner during the hours of sleep, passages and corri‹lors not included.

According to the nature of their sentences, their untionality, and occasionally necording to their habits und temperament, as follows, viz.:—

Europeans, Indinas, and Chinesc.

Debtors.

Misdeincanants.

Penal Imprisonment.

Prisoners on remand and for trial.
