AMOUNT OF PAPER CURRENCY IN CIRCULATION.

The Notes of the Oriental Bank Corporation; the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China; the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China; and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, in circulation during the year ending 31st December, 1883, were in amount as follows:—

ACCOUNTS KEPT IN.

The Accounts of the Colonial Government were formerly kept in Sterling, but from the 1st July, 1862, they have been kept in Dollars, in accordance with instructions from Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies.

The Accounts of the Mercantile establishments are and have been always kept in Dollars.

WEIGHT.

English Standard Weights are employed in the Colony, and also the following Chinese:

  • 120 Catties, or 160 lb = 1 (Shek), or Picul.
  • 100 Catties, or 133⅓ lb = 1 (Tam), or Picul.
  • 16 Taels, or 1⅓ lb = 1 (Kan), or Catty.
  • 10 Mace, or 579.84 Grains Troy = 1 (Leung), or Tael.
  • 1 Candareen, or 57.984 Grains Troy = 1 (Tsin), or Mace.
  • 0.1 Candareen, or 5.7984 Grains Troy = 1 (Fan), or Candareen.
