the moment a chapter is reached containing any

Bible story or where the concluding sentence of the chapter supplies a moral with the slightest

reference to anything specifically Christian, that chapter or that concluding paragraph is at once tn- hooed and the next following chapter taken, is nost unfortunate, as it impresses the boys, in the tmngest possible manner, with the notion that

Christianity itself is discountenanced in the Central

School. On the other hand, Chinese reading

oks used in the Central School are replete with rguments and exhortations in favour of ances-

worship, contain a good deal of Buddhist

nd Tauist teaching, are even, as in the case of dencias, calculated to foster a decidedly anti-

oreign spirit, yet these passages are not skipped.

in the contrary, the Chinese masters told me that

hey, in oral explanation, endeavour to bring

one this kind of teaching to the hearts and

inds of their pupils. Nor can the masters be

lamed for doing so, as they conscientiously

dieve in such doctrines themselves. To counter- ct the manifest unfairness of this state of things, here were some years ago Chinese school-books repared by a Governinent School-book Com- ittee, supplying the rudiments of secular know-

dge, of which these Chinese class books above entioned are devoid, and giving also the ele- ents of Christian religious teaching. But these overnment school-books are not taught 1: the hinese masters in the Central School.

The cost of the Central School will be found etailed in Table IV. It will be seen from that ble that the total of expenditure for the Cen- al School was $11,865.58, as against $9,945.87 1877, showing an increase of $1,919.71. In planation of this apparent excess I have to ate that on account of the Head Master's ab- nce on leave, on half salary, an extra vote was cessary for half of the salary of the present cting Second Master ($630), and that the Act- Third Master, being incapacitater for duty

rough an affection of the eyes, was on furlough

1 full salary for 6 months, during which time

s place was filled by special assistance obtained

a cost of $900. There were some further tra expenses incurred in connection with the aining school for three young men attached to e staff of the Central School during the second

if of the year, two of whom are now employed teachers of English in outside schools.

8. The Government schools outside the Cen- al School do not give much occasion for remark. e Aberdeen school had to be closed in the

iddle of the year owing to the incompetency d neglect of the master, in consequence of which e villagers preferred to send their children to e three other schools in the village, or to Stanley, to Canton to school and to pay there for their uration rather than having them gratuitously der the charge of a master who did not attend his duties properly. But although thus the ily outside school in which in former years nglish had been taught was closed, there were, ith English teaching, viz. :- Wong-nai-ch'ung, Iremarked above, three other schools provided
