AMOUNT OF PAPER CURRENCY IN CIRCULATION.

The Notes of the Oriental Bank Corporation; the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China; the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China; and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, in circulation during the year ending 31st December, 1872, were in amount as follows:

ACCOUNTS KEPT IN.

The Accounts of the Colonial Government were formerly kept in Sterling, but from the 1st July, 1862, they have been kept in Dollars, in accordance with instructions from Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies.

The Accounts of the Mercantile Establishments are and have been always kept in Dollars.

Accounts generally are kept in Sterling money, but some, purely for local reference, are kept in Dollars also; in all transactions between Her Majesty's Treasury and the Banks, &c., the local currency being the recognized medium, the accounts are kept in Dollars and Cents. All money is paid from and received into the Imperial Treasury at 4/3 per Dollar, except the Colony's contribution on account of the Military Expenditure as before mentioned.

English weights and measures only are recognized in all dealings.
