No squatting in the sense in which it is understood in most other Colonies is adopted here as the land is unavailable for pasturage, and except in a very few places, for Agriculture. Persons having possession of Lands & Houses previously to the Treaty were allowed to retain them on payment of certain assessed rentals, now collected by the Registrar General, and in cases where such Lands or Houses are not leased, the Tenants are considered as Tenants at Will.
