How are the Prisoners separated therein? | There is no chapel, but Divine Service is performed in a suitable apartment adapted for the purpose. The prisoners take their place in the Hall of the Transept. The Protestants sit in the Gallery. The Roman Catholics are allotted to the Gaol Department. The Protestant prisoners are under the charge of the Colonial Chaplain at St. John's Cathedral. |
| 14. What duties are performed by the Chaplain? What provision is made for the Instruction of the Prisoners; — and are they supplied with Bibles and other suitable Books? | The Colonial Chaplain visits the Gaol frequently and performs Divine Service once a week. |

Are Dissenting Ministers allowed to have access to the Prisoners; and if so, at what times, and under what restrictions? | Dissenting Ministers are allowed access to the prisoners at all times, provided they do not interfere with the discipline of the prison. The Police Court Missionary acts as interpreter to the Chinese. |

Reasons for Punishments, by Whipping, Irons, Solitary Confinement, or otherwise? | Whipping is inflicted by the sentence of the Chief Justice and Police Magistrates of the Colony for robbery with violence and other serious offences. The following prison offences: Fighting, Shaking, Smoking, Having prohibited Articles in possession, and making noise, when reported to the Superintendent of the Guard with the accompanying circumstances. |

| 21. Are any, and what, Fees demanded of Debtors, or of any other Prisoners, either at their Admission to, or Discharge from the Gaol? | No fees for maintenance of Debtors are demanded either on admission or discharge. |
| 22. General Observations. | The Building, with the exception of some slight damage done to the roof during the late typhoon, which has been repaired, is in an excellent state of repair. During the past year, grilles received from England have been erected on all the windows and corridors, which render the security almost complete without obstructing the ventilation. The interior of the prison is at present in good order, but prisoners are now employed laying a service of piping for the purpose of using gas, and will, if this is completed, complete the whole lighting arrangement. On the 10th proximo this will be an advantage both in cleanliness and assist to render the prison ... During the past year the Establishment has been several times visited by the Colonial Governor, the Honourable the Judges, the Colonial Secretary, and other high Officers of the Government, also by His Lordship the Bishop of Victoria and several foreign gentlemen, all of whom have expressed their satisfaction with the management, discipline and cleanliness maintained. All Officers reside within the Prison and are therefore always at hand in case of any mutiny which would require their immediate assistance. The matron is the wife of a Turnkey and performs her duties to satisfaction and is the only attendant upon female prisoners. No male person is allowed to enter the female Wards unless accompanied by the Matron. |
