Squatting, in the sense in which it is understood in most Colonies, is adopted here, as the Land is unobtainable for pasturage; and, except in a very few places, for agriculture.
One specially, 11121 of Lands of Harvey having possession of Lands prior to the treaty, was allowed to retain them on payment of certain agreed rents now collected by the Registrar General; or by the Land Officer. In towns, such lands are not leased and the parties are considered as Tenants at will.
A renewal of land of Hong Kong has taken place and all of the new survey of cultivated land during the year; Land has never been granted by lease for 999 years to the original holder of the property under the Chinese Government. The remainder of the cultivated Land is licensed to squatters at the rate of $1 per Mow.
