improbable, or in the extreme case of an armed attack being mede in order to effect escape.
24. Constables on duty hailing during the night. During the night season, viz: between the hours of 7 F.M. and day-break there shall be a systematic "hail" by the Constables on watch commencing with No. 1 Sentry on board the Convict Hulk, continued by the Constables at the Floating Station and Hospital, and thence to the Stores and Signal Station on Shore. This hail shall be made every quarter hour; any omission shall be noted by the Officer of the Gaol Staff and European Constable on duty at the time, who shall instantly challenge" the Sentry guilty of the omission and if not as instantly responded to shall immediately call the Sergeant in order that a visit and inquiry shall be promptly made.
The Constables on night duty at the Hospital shall at each quarter bour "hail" carefully note that the sick Con- victs and Hospital attendants are present, to ensure this he shall see the face of each Convict, this is to be effected quietly and without disturbing the sick men, a pair of cloth shoes shall be provided and worn over the shoes of the Constable. After the Constable has assured himself that the Convicts in Hospital are all present he shall make a signal with his lanthorn to the Convict Hulk.

The Constable on watch at the Stores shall each quarter- hour examine the bolts, locks and fastenings and if correct make signal with his lanthorn to the Convict Hulk, Officer of the Gaol Staff and European Constable on duty at the time on board the Convict Hulk shall observe that this signalling is carried out, making prompt enquiry if it
is not.
25. Boats to be hoisted up at night.
The Portuguese Sergeant or Acting Sergeant at the Floating Station shall be responsible that all Police boats, or

snpans, not on duty are hoisted up at 7 P.M., also that the oars of the said boats and the equipment thereof are placed so as to be ready for instant use if boats are required during the night, and yet be under the care and observation of the Chinese Constable on watch.
