In summer time the hours of labour are from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.; in winter from 6.30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with intervals for meals and exercise at the disposal of the Superintendent. Prisoners in solitary confinement are allowed one hour's bathing exercise, morning and evening.

The Convicts may receive a visit or a letter once in three months or oftener on the production of a written order from the Colonial Secretary. Clothing if necessary may be received by Convicts after it has been examined.
Religious services are held in a Shed on the Islands, but there is no separation whilst at service therein.
The Chinese Prisoners do not require the services of a Chaplain, but the Roman Catholic clergymen visit occasionally those baptized by them; they are supplied with Bibles.
All Known Ministers of Religion are allowed free access to Prisoners, but so as not to interfere with the work or discipline of the Hulk.
The Hulk Surgeon visits the Hulk once each day or oftener if necessary and prescribes medicine for the sick, who have room in the Floating Police Station.

The Prisoners are all employed, except in sickness and on Sundays.
