There has been so ineffective malady during the year. The sickness and mortality do not appear to have resulted from any other than natural causes and are certainly much less than might have been expected considering the usual character of the occupants of the accommodation.
The accommodation requires prior attention for the sick prisoners, as well as Chinese, in separate and comfortable conditions, as may be consistent with the circumstances of the case. The expense is afforded by the Colonial Government.
The total number of the Police of the Civil Hospital during the past year has been 275, and the number of deaths 19. Taking into account the arduous nature of the duties performed, with various climatic and other causes of disease constantly in operation, the sickness and mortality do not appear to me unusually large, on a basis of information only to be gained by more extended experiences. I shall therefore make no remarks at present on the subject.
The temporary Civil Hospital has lately undergone a thorough repair and is now in excellent order and amply sufficient for the requirements of the Constabulary Force, as well as the numerous Band, always to be fixed on the strength of a British Colony.
