The only Gold Coins legally current are those of the United Kingdom and the late India Company's Gold Mohur, coined since September 1835, valued at £1.9.2 Sterling. This latter, however, is seldom met with in the Colony.
The Silver Coins, besides those of the United Kingdom, are the Dollars of Spain, Mexico, and the South American States, each equivalent to 4/2 Sterling; The East India Company, Rupees, Half, and quarter Rupees, at 2/3, 1/3, and sp1⁄2 respectively.
The Dollar of Spain is rarely, if ever, met with in a perfect coin, but always chopped or broken, and passes by weight - 71% being equivalent to 1000 Dollars. In this state, the Spanish Dollar is not a legal tender, but being the standard by which all commercial transactions with the Chinese are regulated at the Consular Ports, it is also the principal currency of the Island.

British Silver is not a legal tender above £2.
These coins have always been taken interchangeably for each other at the above rates according to the assumed intention of the Queen's Proclamation of 12th May 1845. But by a Judgment of the Supreme Court given in 1854, it has been decided that such is not the effect of that Proclamation, and that special Contracts must be satisfied in the Coin in which they are made.
The Dollars of Spain, Mexico, and the South American Republics, in fact, all Dollars being of purity not inferior to that of the current Spanish Dollars, are now taken at par.
