*Extract of letter from the Morning Correspondent of the Morning Post dated Hong Kong March 8, published in the Morning Post of April 29, 1860.*
> "The Government Gazette came out published last week interesting particulars with regard to the inhabitants of Hong Kong. By this Gazette — nominally census of Hong Kong for 1857 — we find that the grand total of human souls for this small island is 77,094, of which 56,412 are males and 20,682 are females. Out of this the white or European population give a grand total of 1,511, of which males count 1,007 and females 404. There are 46 opium shops!"
