Adding a vast amount of business to the annual Return than would otherwise be the case. The attention of the Police and Tepos of the several districts has repeatedly been brought to these damages to Crown property and also to the constant daily depredations in the woods (if they may be so called) in Causeway Bay and Wong Nei Chung; it is perfectly apparent who are the people making these robberies; the cutters are the people who burn down the brushwood and the grass, but since the occupation of the Colony the evil has existed and has formed an annual complaint from me in these Reports, as well upon other occasions, both verbally and otherwise.
I need hardly point out to this Excellency how desirable it would be to have the entire Island covered with wood; a variety of fine kinds might be introduced here with advantage, and would in course of years form a handsome revenue.
I effected the supply of water to Government House in connexion with the tanks and main laid down some years since for the Government offices and Barracks; the service has been satisfactorily executed and the pressure is ample to cause its ascent to the roof, where distributing tanks are placed, furnished with ball cocks.
