The labour performed by the convicts during the year has consisted of the ordinary description, but in the early part of that period it was not so satisfactory as it ought to have been, in consequence of a change over them, the guardianship effected in their charge and the want of an overseer to direct their operations. In addition to this a fewer number of men placed at the Disposal of the Department than usual, and these two particulars combined prevented the execution of a variety of works required.
The services however as actually undertaken consisted in the employment of 11626 men in several scavenging under the special orders of the Police, performing ...
