The building, so often condemned by Governors, and repeatedly desired to be knocked down and rebuilt in another and more convenient part of the gaol, is still in the same place, and causing much annoyance to Prisoners in their cells and to the Turnkeys in their dwellings; when it will be removed it is impossible to say.
The room situated as a Hospital for the Chinese Prisoners is... I am happy to... without... changed; for if it remain as it has done for years, notwithstanding the repeated reports made of it (it is the ground floor and adjoining... the drain of which passes the doorway, and the stench arising at times is most offensive) must prove a sufficient cause for mortality among the inmates therein.
The gaol, in my opinion, requires enlargement, as there are not a sufficient number of cells, more particularly when condemned convicts are sent, and... and in vain of such... to remain a... the live... awaiting trial.
I have often seen... in a cell... I had them separated, 5 or 6 to a cell, and soon... to be... many... the management but what... no room available.
There are men, not yet tried, only allowed to lounge about a verandah for a few hours, in place of permitting them to walk about a yard appropriated for...
