The year 1865 may be considered to have been one very healthy for the European and European civilian inhabitants of Hong Kong. The disease most prevalent was fever, but this fever had no dangerous character, and was entirely amenable to treatment. It belonged either to the Remittent or the Intermittent type, and approached a typhoid character, the treatment required being more of a supporting than an antiphlogistic nature. Quinine proved when given in moderate doses, and succeeded fully when administered in large doses at short intervals during the time of the most intermittent remission. Wine generally needed. I am just aware that a single wave of that fever known as the Hong Kong Fever was of the severe type of fever.
