The only gold Coins legally Current are those of the British Crown, and the East India Company's Gold Mohur, Coined since the 1st September 1835, value £1.9.2. Sterling. This latter however is seldom if ever met with in the Colony.
The Silver Coins, which bear the head of the King, are the Dollars of Spain, Mexico, and the South American states, with equivalent to 4s 2d Sterling. The East India Company's Rupees, Half, and Quarter Rupees at 1/10, 1/11, and 5/2d respectively.
The Dollar of Spain is rarely met with as a perfect coin, but always chipped, passes by weight — 7.1.7. dwts, being equivalent to $1000. In the state the Spanish Dollar is not a legal tender, but being the standard by which all Commercial transactions with the Chinese are regulated at the Commercial Part, it is also the principal Currency of the Colony. The Copper Coins are those of the British Indian and the Copper Cash of China, 24 of which are equal to One penny sterling. British Silver is not a legal tender above £2. These Coins have always been taken interchangeably for each other at the above Rates according to the assumed intention of the Proclamation of 12 May 1845. But by a judgement of the Supreme Court given in 1854 it has been decided that such is not the effect of that Proclamation, and that special contracts must be satisfied in the Coin in which they are named. Considerable confusion has been the Consequence. The Dollar of Spain, Mexico, and the South American Republics, in fact all Dollars being of fineness not inferior to that of the Canton Dollar are now taken at par.
