Of convicts, as have initiated them in the most effective mode of making repairs; and the guard as well as the convicts being as frequently changed, they are more or less unwilling to complete any services which are not specially directed by some third person.
Within the gaol the ordinary prison labour has been carried on to good effect in repairing stove for the round house, and latterly 3 carpenters and 1 blacksmith have done much service in effecting such miscellaneous services necessarily demanded in building so occupied, as well as in the repairs of tools of all kinds used by the men, both within and without the gaol walls. Three hard labour machines were fixed in position by the artisans, and the blacksmith was usefully employed in cleaning, working and arranging the various parts of the treadwheel previous to its erection.
I have to report the satisfactory termination of the law suit instituted indirectly against the Government for the resumption of Lots 8 and 8A, alluded to in last year's report. Marine Lot alluded to in my list.
The number of leases or extension leases issued from and prepared in the office has amounted to 12 during the year.
Sales of land by public auction were held, comprising an area of 8a. 7r. 54p., which produced a premium of £185 16s. 8d., and an addition to the rent roll of £241 8s. 1d. per annum. 2 lots were resumed by government which were either abandoned by the proprietors, who were not to be found, or were taken possession of for non-payment of rent.
