The local Currency, as established by Royal Proclamation, has been much disturbed in the course of the year. The Chinese are capriciously demanding almost exclusively the old chopped Spanish Dollars, particularly in payment for tea. These Dollars are constantly diminishing without any influx of others of the same kind, so that their comparative scarcity, coupled with the unusually large amount of specie required last season for the purchase of tea, has placed them at a considerable premium in the Canton market with reference to Sterling exchange on Mexican Dollars and Rupees at their Sterling rates.
