The schedule of the Department was increased by the addition of the booties attached to my Department; five were reduced in September last; the remaining four are very serviceable, they stand their duty thoroughly and are of the greatest service to me for their services as staff men in chain surveying, or levelling and as Overseers on new works and the repair of old. Upon the roads, their duty consists in clearing side channels, and drains, when not otherwise employed by various other services.
I cannot speak too highly of Assow; he is intelligent, honest, and careful, and displays great zeal for the Department; he understands English perfectly, and I can trust him to make measurements upon lines that are clearly defined, which when performed with great accuracy without my personal superintendence, is of consequence, for it lessens out of doors work in some degree. His wages are very low for a man of his cleverness, and I should wish much that they were increased as he is one of the most deserving.
