SHIBUSAWA, Baron Yei-ichi (TOKYO), Merchant; b. Mar., 1840, in Saitama-ken. Took service under Shogunate in its declining days and visited Europe, 1867-1868, in company with a Tokugawa Prince; on establishment of Imperial Government, was appointed

to Treasury; resigned, 1873; founded 1st Bank, in 1873; Chairman of Tokyo Chamber of Commerce from its inaugura- tion, till 1905; created Baron, 1900. Address: Tokyo, Japan.

SHIGENO, An-yeki (TOKYO), (Токто), Doctor of Literature, Member of House of Peers; b. Oct. 1827, at Satsuma. Was form- erly Professor of Tokyo University; is distinguished Chinese classical scholar and historian. Address: Tokyo, Japan.
