Went to Canada, 1873, and was employed on railway and private engineering work until 1880; given position as assistant Engineer on location of the Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie Railway, 1880; in 1882 was appointed Dominion Land Surveyor and placed in charge of a portion of the 13th Base Line Survey for Canadian Government; this work being finished acted as assistant En- gineer on the Northern Pacific

Junction Railway, and as such located the line from Graven- hurst to South River; transfer- red to Chief Engineer's Office during the construction of this line, until 1885; and then join- ed General Middleton's forces during the N. W. Rebellion as Lieutenant in the Dominion land Surveyors' Corps; was present at the 3 days' fighting and capture of Batoche for which received Medal and clasp; returning to Toronto, appointed as Engineer in Charge of adjustment and relaying of 222 miles of track on the N.
