Principal Events.-In second plague epidemic 8 Europeans died but dislocation of business much less than in 1894. Commission appointed to report on insanitary dwellings. Military contribution of Colony fixed at 171/2% of gross revenue exclusive of capital expenditure on works and buildings. Typhoon of 29/7 caused considerable damage to property.
Trade & Industries.-Unprofitable year for trade, importations except of flour and kerosine oil being on limited scale and sales generally unsatisfactory. Exchange averaged 2/24 for the year and stood at 2/17 on December 30th.
Public Works.-Streets laid out at Tai Kok Tsui.
Legislation.-Additional Royal Instructions of 7/7 substituted O. C. Troops for Ch. Justice on Leg. Council and increased numbers of Unofficial Members from 5 to 6. British North Borneo Extradition Ord. (No. 1) passed. Factors Ord. (No. 3) and Sale of Goods Ord. (No. 4) introduced mutatis mutandis provisions of English Acts.
