COLONIAL REPORTS--ANNUAL.

The actual number of individual Ocean-going Vessels of European construction during the year 1919 was 957, of which 301 were British and 656 Foreign. In 1918 the corresponding figures were 675, of which 162 were British and 513 Foreign.

These 957 ships measured 2,230,105 tons. They entered 4,575 times and gave a collective tonnage of 7,242,689. Thus 282 more ships entered 1,232 more times and gave a collective tonnage greater by 2,364,580 tons, an average of 1,919.3 tons per entry.

The 301 British ships carried 2,408 British officers and 32 Foreign officers, the latter consisting of 5 Norwegians, 18 Americans, 2 Danish, 2 Swedish, 1 Roumanian, 3 Russians, and 1 Greek.

Thus, the proportion of Foreign officers in British ships was 1.33 per cent., comprising 7 nationalities, a decrease of 140 per cent., with a decrease in number of officers and an increase in ships.

The 656 Foreign ships carried 4,659 officers, of whom 78 were British, as follows:-
