71. The statistical section has continued to compile comprehensive returns of the working of the Railway.

IV. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.

73. All locomotives, carriages, wagons, machinery, tools and plant have been maintained in as good working order and repair as funds available have allowed.

74. The staff have been working at full pressure throughout the year due to the abnormal conditions obtaining, and the activities of the shops have been expanded to their fullest extent.

75. British Section locomotives continued to haul the through fast and through mixed trains, and Chinese Section engines to haul the expresses, between Canton and Kowloon.

76. Considerable repair work was undertaken on "A" class locomotives, consisting primarily of staying and re-tubing boilers.

77. As foreshadowed in last year's report, it was found necessary to withdraw "B" class engine No. 11 from the service in January, and No. 10 in June. Provision had been made in the Estimates for reconditioning and superheating the boiler of the former. In January, however, the boiler failed to pass the hydraulic test and an examination of the firebox disclosed a back tube plate fracture. As the condition of Nos. 9 and 10 was doubtful, it was decided to abandon the original proposal and to recondition two boilers in the Works, fitting them with new copper fireboxes from Home. In June, the boiler of No. 10 engine was removed for re-staying and a fatigue crack was found in the front plate of the firebox; an attempt was made to weld this, but without success,
