REPORT OF POSTMASTER GENERAL, HONG KONG, FOR THE YEAR 1937.
(A) POST OFFICE.
STAFF.
No changes in the senior staff occurred during the year.
MAILS, REGISTERED ARTICLES AND PARCELS.
2. Full details are shown in Tables I, II and III.
3. The Pan American Airways service was extended to Hong Kong in April and a weekly schedule is maintained providing an all air service to the United States of America via Philippine Islands, Guam and Hawaii Islands. Connection is made at San Francisco with various air lines operating to Canada, South America, etc.
4. The total weight of air mail received and despatched by all air lines during the year was 89,316 lb. as compared with 21,279 lb. in 1936 an increase of 68,037 lb.
5. The total number of parcels handled shows a large increase over the 1936 figures. The increase was due to improved local trade conditions and to the diversion to Hong Kong services of a considerable amount of traffic on account of the postal difficulties experienced by the Chinese Postal Administration during the latter half of the year.
REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE.
6. Tables IV and V show comparative figures for 1936 and 1937 under separate subheads and Table VI comparative totals for the past ten years.
7. The balance of revenue over the expenditure charged against the departmental vote was $1,489,718.
