4. NIGHTSOIL REMOVAL.

The contractors for the removal of nightsoil from Shaukiwan, Aberdeen, Pokfulam, Ap Lei Chau, Stanley and Tai Tam respectively carried out their work satisfactorily.

During the year nightsoil from Victoria and Kowloon was removed by the Department to Kwai Chung Bay and sold to a contractor for disposal outside the Colony.

5. DISINFECTION AT DISINFECTING STATIONS.

Table V shows the number of articles and vehicles disinfected during the year 1937. The figures for 1936 are given for comparison.

6. DEAD BOXES.

Dead boxes are obtainable at any hour of the day or night at the two Disinfecting Stations.

7. PUBLIC BATH-HOUSES.

Table VI shows the number of men, women and children who used the Bath-houses during the year.

8. CEMETERIES, MORTUARIES, CREMATORIA.

Table VII (i) shows the number of interments at the various cemeteries during the year 1937 and gives particulars of cremations, bodies deposited in the Tung Wah Hospital Mortuary, and removals from the Colony before burial.

Details of the number of exhumations carried out by the Department will be found in Table VII (ii) together with the number carried out by relatives of deceased persons.

9. UNDERTAKERS.

One undertaker's licence was issued and three cancelled during the year making a total of fifty-two on the register on 31st December, 1937.

10. WORK DONE UNDER THE PUBLIC HEALTH (SANITATION) AND BUILDINGS ORDINANCES.

(i) Sanitary Nuisances and Contraventions of Sanitary by-laws:

Table VIII shows the total number of nuisances reported and the action taken to obtain compliance. Of the total number of nuisances reported in which action was taken almost 66% were abated after receipt of a letter. In 403 cases a legal notice failed to produce compliance.
