35. It was thought that one of the two Hall-Scott Motor Coaches might be employed profitably on a pick-up passenger-cum-goods shuttle service between certain stations in the New Territories, especially as in recent years owing to depression, greater use has been made of the adjacent native markets. In consequence, a service of this nature commenced on July 2nd, the villagers having been notified previously through the District Officer of the facilities offered. It was pointed out to them that the scheme was of an experimental nature, and its continuance depended on the support it received. The traffic forthcoming was not sufficiently remunerative to cover working costs at the very low fares necessitated by the presence of competition from a bus service paralleling the line. The coach was withdrawn after a 7 weeks' trial, and interesting data was obtained which clearly indicated that the bus service was operating at a loss.

36. Statistics obtained by means of a check carried out by Railway staff of all road vehicles passing between certain fixed points, during the period September 26th to October 2nd, indicated that the loss of passenger revenue to the Railway by reason of road competition between Kowloon and Taipo Market amounts at present to a comparatively small sum per annum.

2. Rates and Fares.

37. For the reasons given in paragraph 24, revised terminal through fares were introduced on February 7th. They have suffered no further change throughout the year and are as given below:

UP DOWN New Old H.K.C. H.K.Ö. New Old 0.0. 0.0. 1st Class No change $4.00 No change $5.60 2nd $2.00 $1.80 $2.80 $2.60 3rd $1.00 $0.70 $1.40 $1.00

Passenger receipts have improved considerably, but a more intensive service would be welcomed, and will no doubt be introduced as new locomotives are delivered to the Chinese Section of the line.

38. Local rates and fares have undergone no change.

3. Operating.

39. Following as a logical sequence to the slip coach to golfers on the morning express train on Sundays and Holidays, a second slip coach constructed as a Buffet Car was attached to the 12.45 p.m. fast train to Canton, on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, commencing February 15th. The coach is most popular on Saturdays and, although it is not so well patronized on Wednesdays, yet it undoubtedly proves a convenience to those who are able to get away in midweek.
