In the latter months of the year the nucleus of a female class was also formed under one of the department's physical training mistresses. These trainees, male and female, on passing out are either absorbed by the provided schools or fill specific requisitions by the Grant Schools.
98. In view of the rapid expansion of the service Government at once agreed to the recruitment from England of a qualified Supervisor who will assume general control with the executive assistance of the European Instructor.
99. As the year closed practice had reached an advanced stage in anticipation of the new physical training competition arranged by the department for vernacular boys' schools. With a view to keeping the time required for the competition within measurable limits it was considered necessary to stipulate for a squad of not less than 45. A brief reference to this event will be found in the report of the Inspectors of Vernacular Schools.
100. Thanks to economies effected it was found possible to offer to assist the Grant-in-aid Schools with a supply of free spectacles upon condition that they in turn instituted a regular eye-inspectional service by qualified medical practitioners. It is satisfactory to record that the whole of the schools to whom the offer applied (it did not apply to Diocesan Girls' Junior School) have joined the scheme.
It is still more satisfactory to be able to add that, it being found possible at the close of the year to make a similar offer to the free, subsidized, vernacular schools, the Directors of the Tung Wah Hospital, representing a roll of over 1,000 pupils, promptly clinched the bargain.
101. As noted in the report of the Inspectors of Vernacular Schools a private school for deaf-and-dumb Chinese children was opened during the year and has been given a small subsidy from public funds. This is the first school of its kind in the Colony.
