4.-General.
52. With the idea of popularizing the railway and at the same time effecting a distinction between the fast trains and the expresses proper, the four principal daily expresses were given the following names in both Chinese and English:-
The "Fei" Chin - Flying Arrow.
The "Fei" Sing - Flying Star.
The "Fei" Ying - Flying Eagle.
The "Fei" Lang - Flying Dragon.
53. In the annual report for 1934 (paragraph 46), reference was made to the introduction of an arrangement for loading cargo direct into railway trucks at the Hong Kong Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company's siding. This arrangement was extended to the sidings of Messrs. Holt's wharves during the current year. As an example of these improved facilities; on February 28th an urgent shipment of 1,000 tons of sulphate of ammonia was loaded at the former siding, customs formalities were completed, and the special train dispatched to Canton the same day.
54. The Administration was fortunate in securing towards the end of the year a public address unit at a very reasonable figure. Various tests to obtain the best acoustic results were carried out at the instigation and with the co-operation of the Public Works Electrical Department, before a final selection was made. The set has already given proof of its usefulness in controlling and supplying accurate information to crowds at holiday periods.
55. The through tickets sold by the various Agencies during the year are summarised below, 1934 figures being given for comparison:-
