5. The daily service of trains during the months January to April consisted of 33 trains. In May, with the introduction of the new summer time-table, the number was cut to 28 by the elimination of unremunerative services. In August, special-fare trains were put on, but, with the exception of a few minor alterations to the timings of certain local trains, there was no further change in the October winter time-table.
39. Local train mileage decreased by 18.14% due to the elimination of uneconomic trains. Through mileage increased by 36.74%, owing to the mid-day fast train service which commenced on October 1st last year, and to the running of the special trains mentioned in the preceding paragraph. The net result was an increase in total train mileage of 67,019 or 15.44%.
40. Foreign train mileage, or mileage run by British Section locomotives in hauling through trains over the Chinese Section, was 277,294 compared with 218,101 in 1984. The revenue derived from this haulage was $289,641, as against $227,380 last year, a gain of 27.5%. On and from July 1st, Chinese Section locomotives hauled the through mixed trains between Canton and Shek Lung, the journey between Shek Lung and Kowloon being performed by British Section locomotives.
41. Improved locomotive diagramming enabled a saving in unproductive expense to be made by increasing the train mileage per engine hour. This year's figure was 9.65 compared with 8.71 last year. The complete service of 30 trains is now operated by 9 engines, 6 of which are employed in hauling the 10 through trains.
42. Coal consumption has increased from 70.45 lbs. to 72.47 lbs. per train mile, or 2.85%. This is attributed to the fact that "Natal Navigation Group" coal used this year is slightly inferior in quality to "Enyati" coal which was in use from 1933 to 1934.
43. An innovation introduced with the May 1st time-table was the attachment of a slip coach to the 8.30 a.m. "Flying Arrow" Canton Express on Sundays and Public Holidays. This coach carries golfers travelling to Sheung Shui. The standard use of Janney automatic couplings and the fact that Sheung Shui station is situated at the end of a down grade from the station south of it, makes slipping simple, while the Westinghouse brake fitted in addition to the hand brake renders it safe. The venture has proved most popular, as much for its speedy and smooth running as for its advertising value. It is thought to be the first instance of the operation of a slip coach on a Colonial Railway.
