22. Sectional through goods receipts fell from $23,788.44 to $17,700.77, a matter of 25.5%. The decline, which increased from 14.6% during the first six months to 35.5% during the second six months, is attributed mainly to the failure of the fruit crop.
23. Local passenger receipts, as was to be expected, have suffered from the prevailing economic depression to the extent of 23.6%, the actual earnings being reduced from $647,055.72 to $495,041.37. Shum Chun traffic, which contributed 80.3% of the shortfall, has declined at a uniform rate since December 1933. Chart A, page 1, shows the general trend.

Lower Brickworks traffic was responsible for 30.1% of the shrinkage, the receipts from this source falling still further, from $1,676.00 to $802.70. The balance is explained by poorer trading. There is no evidence that the traffic has been lost to the road.

26. River-boat fares touched a record low level in February, as a result of which railway revenue declined to a serious degree. An effort to meet the competition by introducing second and third class return tickets at a fare and a half was made on April 1st.
27. By August the river-rail situation had reached a stage where the measures taken in a passive role, that is to say, without engaging in the rate-war, became totally inadequate to prevent the continuous fall in revenue, and the combined administrations decided that they could no longer delay in taking all legitimate steps to safeguard their income whatever the consequences to the river-boats.
28. Special-fare trains, third class only, at 50 cents (Hong Kong currency) per head, and the equivalent in Canton money for the down journey, were run commencing August 1st.
