71. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, etc.: Sewers, storm water drains and trained nullahs were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition, the open channels and nullahs being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. The automatic flushing tanks were kept working continuously, and sand deposits, as these accumulated, were removed. Many defective traps, gullies gratings etc., including forty-three old type gully gratings at Tai Kok Tsui were replaced and a few old disused drains destroyed and filled in. All metal work in connection with the drainage systems was inspected and, where found necessary, repaired and tarred.

Gas Lighting: The total number of street lamps in use at the end of the year, all of which are incandescent, was ~568, an increase of thirteen over the previous year.

73. Electric Lighting: The total number of lamps in use at the end of the year was 644, an increase of twenty over the previous year.
Experiments were made with various improved types of lamps in Nathan Road and at the junction of Jordan Road and Gascoigne Road. A scheme for the improvement of lighting in Nathan Road is under consideration.
All traffic control lights were maintained in good order.

74. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damage: Land slips occurred in cuttings on Tai Wan Road and Ma Tau Wai Road, and scouring on approach road to Central British School site and at Tai Wan Beach. Washouts and surface channels at Kowloon Hospital were made good.
