883 tap samples of filtered water on the island were examined by the Government Bacteriologist with the following results:
741 shewed B.C.C. absent in 50 C.C. (83.9%)
98 others were above standard (11.1%)
44 were below standard (5.0%)
These results compare favourably with those obtained in London and other British cities. The analyses by the Government Analyst shewed that the water was of good quality throughout the year. The city supply was treated with 4.303 tons of liquid chlorine which is equivalent to an average admixture of 0.28 of a part per million.
The work of overhauling the valves on the mains in the city was continued, 134 being repaired on principal mains, and thirty-four on sub-mains.
At the end of the year forty-two public stand pipes, 189 pedestal fire hydrants and 658 underground hydrants were in use.
New services were constructed or old ones altered, improved, repaired or connected to the mains to the number of 6,352 and forty-one supplies were laid for building purposes.
The number of inspections of services carried out was 17,082. Defective services were found in 735 cases, all of which were put in proper repair after the usual notices had been served.
Particulars of the quantity of water supplied by meters are given in Table VI, the amount so supplied being 2,730.39 million gallons. 67.8% of the total consumption for the year has therefore been accounted for by meters compared with 66.7% in 1934.
Electrical work was carried out in connection with additions and alterations to Tytam Pumping Station, Pokfulum Pumping Station, Waterworks Workshop (House Service), Elliott Filter Beds, European Quarters, No. 5B Garden Road and Hong Kong Garden Service Reservoir. Motors in Bowen Road Mechanical Filter and Elliott Filter Houses were maintained in good order.
Expenditure $227,811.79
Village Water Supplies (a) Shaukiwan and Chai Wan:- The supply was subjected to restrictions similar to those in force in the City of Victoria, a constant supply being maintained for 124 days during the year.
