75. Maintenance of Water Works:-A constant supply was maintained during the year. Yaumati Hill Service Reservoir, which has a capacity of five million gallons, was completed and brought into operation on the 30th March.

The new 12″ main encircling Kowloon Point was completed during the year and has greatly improved distribution.

The total yield of the Shing Mun River as measured by the Recorder and V Gauge at the Upper Intake was 4,665.19 million gallons as compared with 2,883.4 million gallons last year. In addition 122.72 million gallons were obtained from the Needle Hill Stream Intake. The pumps below Pineapple Pass worked on 209 days during the year and delivered 53.53 million gallons equivalent to 256 million gallons per working day. During the year 2,000 million gallons were delivered from the Shing Mun Valley through the tunnels into the Reception and Byewash Reservoirs, but a percentage of this quantity could not be stored and ran to waste. The minimum monthly yield was in February when the quantity delivered was 66.46 million gallons.

The total quantity filtered by the Paterson Filtration Plant during the year was 1,646.94 million gallons, 392.09 million gallons of which were supplied to Hong Kong.

The total quantity of water supplied to Kowloon during the year was 2,356.25 million gallons (exclusive of 98.69 million gallons supplied to Water Boats at Lai Chi Kok) which gives an average daily consumption of 6.46 million gallons or 19.6 gallons per head per day based on an estimated population of 330,000.

Details are given in Table IX.

The quantity of water stored in the impounding reservoirs on 1st January was 651.16 million gallons and a minimum of 285.80 million gallons was reached on 24th May.
