48. Maintenance of Roads and Bridges in City and Improvements of Roads & Bridges in City.-The surfaces of approximately seventy-one miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory manner. Connaught Road West (Eastern Street to Ping On Wharf) was laid with 6" cement concrete foundation to receive granite setts and asphaltic sand carpeting. The wall on Inland Lot 59, section A, Caine Road (below Roman Catholic Cathedral) was taken down and rebuilt to new alignment. Experimental sections of "Taramac" were laid and obtained good results.

The following figures show the extent of the operations carried out at the Government Quarry, Tsat Tse Mui, during the year: A total quantity of 32,914 cubic yards of various grades of stone was passed through crushers, of which 5,701 cubic yards were made into tar macadam, 1,334 cubic yards into sand carpeting and 25,879 cubic yards were delivered to various works as the material came from crushers. 27,725 granolithic paving slabs for use on footways, 31 reinforced concrete standards for railings, 36 wooden notice boards, 29 garden seats, 1 sentry box and 1 Rubber Squeegee were provided.
