24. In 1933 there were 613 unaided Vernacular schools and 124 unaided English schools.

REVIEW OF YEAR.
STAFF.
25. Mr. N. L. Smith, B.A. was appointed Director of Education on 25th January.
26. On 25th January Mr. G. P. de Martin, M.B.E., M.A., Senior Inspector of English Schools, who had been acting Director of Education since 7th June, 1930 proceeded on leave prior to retirement. Mr. de Martin was first appointed to the Department on 31st December, 1903.
27. Mr. A. O. Brawn, Senior Master was appointed Inspector of English Schools on 29th September vice Mr. de Martin retired.
28. Mrs. K. M. Nightingale, Senior Mistress, retired on medical grounds on 20th October after 16 years' service.
29. Mr. D. Orr arrived from Australia on appointment in January.
30. Miss Marsh arrived from home on appointment in September.
31. One University Trained Teacher resigned and was replaced.
