On 10th April a human case of Rabies occurred in the Shatin District, New Territories. A few days later a canine case was detected near Kowloon City. Other two cases occurred in Kowloon, the first, early in June, biting three children, and the latter, early in July, biting four children and one adult before being captured.
The usual measures were taken.
No further cases occurred up to the end of the year.
Towards the end of the year a 'Guide for the Public to the Prevention and Treatment of Rabies in Hong Kong' was drawn up by the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon, in collaboration with the Government Bacteriologist, for publication under the auspices of the Sanitary Board.
17. Twenty-five animal brains were examined by the Government Bacteriologist for evidence of Rabies with three positive results.
18. Rinderpest:-
Three small outbreaks occurred during the year.
The undermentioned figures relating thereto show the value of the immunisation methods employed when compared with a case incidence of nearly 100% and a mortality of roughly 70% which occurred before immunisation was practised.
(i) 62 contacts 50 affected 10 deaths. (ii) 15 7 1 death. (iii) 21 5 2 deaths.Quarantine measures and disinfection were carried out.
At the request of the owners all contacts and affected cases were treated with 'immune serum.'
LIVE STOCK IN THE COLONY.
19. The following numbers of Live Stock were in the Districts under the supervision of Sanitary Inspectors on 31st December, 1933:-
