7. New conservancy contracts for a period of 5 years in respect of Victoria and Kowloon from 1st February were signed, the sum payable being $1,200.00 per month for Victoria and $650.00 per month for Kowloon. REFUSE COLLECTION AND REFUSE REMOVAL.

10. Equipment.-The department has at its disposal for refuse collection and removal 21 motor lorries, of which 13 are employed in Hong Kong and 8 in Kowloon, 2 towing tugs, 1 steam lighter, 7 deep draft and 5 light draft lighters, and 5 sailing junks.

(During the latter part of the year two old refuse lorries were converted into water wagons, leaving a total of 19 lorries, 12 of which were employed in Hong Kong and 7 in Kowloon).

Collection. There were collected and delivered to Depots:-

(i) from City of Victoria, including Hill District and outlying residences ...

(all of which were collected by motor lorries, except 907.96 tons at Aberdeen and 1,958 tons at Shaukiwan, which were collected by hand carts).

(ii) from Kowloon including Tong and Kowloon City 69,544.24 tons Kowloon 38,016.5 tons

(all of which were collected by motor lorries except 3,117 tons which were collected by hand carts in Kowloon).

Total 107,560.74 tons

(or 294.68 tons per day).

In addition some 2,165.06 tons of refuse were collected in rural districts (including Ap Lei Chau and Shaukiwan) and burnt in incinerator.
