REPORT OF THE GENERAL POST OFFICE, HONG KONG, FOR THE YEAR 1932.

(A) POST OFFICE.

STAFF.

Mr. M. J. Breen, Postmaster General, returned from leave on 20th April and took over duty from Mr. E. W. Hamilton.

2. Mr. J. H. B. Lee was appointed Assistant Postmaster General on 1st January.

MAILS, REGISTERED ARTICLES & PARCELS.

3. Full details are shown in Tables I, II and III.

4. 15 bags of mails for Europe forwarded per s.s. "Georges Philippar" on the 26th April 1932 were lost when that vessel was destroyed by fire.

5. A service from Hong Kong providing air transit from Saigon to Europe and intermediate countries was opened on 2nd August. The air mail service from Saigon is weekly. Hong Kong-Saigon connection is maintained by the regular fortnightly sailing of the French Mail steamers and on alternate weeks by any steamer that can make the connection at Saigon. The average time of transit Hong Kong to Great Britain is 15 days.

6. A heavy decrease in parcel post traffic was experienced during the year particularly with China and Great Britain. The disturbed conditions prevailing in the former country and the increased duties in the latter were contributory causes.

REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE.

7. Tables IV and V show comparative figures for 1931 and 1932 under the appropriate subheads, and Table VI comparative totals for the past nine years.

8. The balance of revenue over expenditure amounted to $763,843.

9. Tables VII and VIII provide details relating to the sale of postage stamps.
